How to Take Great Photos of Your Car with Your Phone

In the car industry, first impressions matter. A good photo can be the deciding factor that makes a potential buyer stop scrolling and click on your ad. That’s why it’s important to know how to take photos that really showcase your car in the best possible way.

Traditionally, many car dealers have used professional photographers for this. The results are often impressive: straight angles, even lighting, and tidy surroundings. But as margins get tighter and efficiency becomes more important, more and more dealers are choosing a smarter and more cost-effective solution.

Take Control with Your Phone and Autopix

Autopix is a mobile app designed for exactly this purpose. In just a few simple steps, you can take the photos yourself, while the app automatically edits the background, adjusts the floor and lighting, and prepares the image for publishing—all in seconds.

The result? Photos that look like they were shot in a professional studio, even if they were taken in a car wash.

“The technology has come so far that it’s often impossible to tell the difference between a studio photo and one processed with Autopix,” says Jørgen Munch Jensen, former car photographer and now business developer at Autopix.

Jørgen has photographed over 6,000 cars and knows the challenges car dealers face. Here are his best tips if you’re taking the photos yourself:

Tips for capturing good photos
  1. Keep a Good Distance from the Car
Stand at least 3.5 meters away. If you stand too close, the wide-angle effect can distort the car’s natural lines. A bit more distance gives more natural proportions.

  2. Find the Right Camera Height
Hold the camera at the height of the car’s midpoint. This highlights the car’s lines and creates a more balanced look.

  3. Ensure Visual Consistency Across Locations
For dealer groups with multiple branches, it’s important that all photos look consistent. Autopix offers features like a “bounding box” and photo guides that help you position the camera the same way every time. This creates a professional and cohesive look online and strengthens your brand.

  4. Use Light to Your Advantage
Overcast weather is perfect—it provides soft, even lighting for both exterior and interior shots. Avoid direct sunlight, which creates harsh shadows. If you’re shooting indoors, use lights with a neutral color temperature (5000–5500 Kelvin) to bring out the car’s true colors.

A Simpler Workday with Autopix

With Autopix, you get a professional photo solution right in your pocket. That means less waiting time, lower costs, and full control over how your cars are presented without compromising on quality.
